Success Story: Gregg – Replacing Caffeine with Protein Gave This Patient an Energy Boost
Looking at Greg you would think he was the epitome of health. At 30 years of age he was athletic and at a seemingly healthy weight with good energy. However what you would not know by just looking at him was that he was having knee pain, poor digestion, was losing muscle mass, and needed caffeine to keep his energy levels up.
Like many Americans, Greg couldn’t function without two or more cups of coffee each morning.
Similar to many of our Diet Typing patients, Greg originally came to see us to heal his knee pain through Prolotherapy. Throughout the course of his Prolotherapy treatments, he kept hearing about and reading about Hauser Diet Typing. He decided to give it a go. His main goal was to figure out exactly what he should be eating to increase his energy naturally, without the aid of caffeine. He also wanted to improve his digestion and lose his gut that seemed to be forming as he was getting older.
Greg’s current diet was high in carbohydrates: he often ate granola, yogurt, fruit, sandwiches, ice cream, candy, pizza, and hamburgers. When we saw his Diet Typing results, there was no question as to why Greg was experiencing low energy, trouble healing, and decreased muscle mass. Greg’s test results revealed that he was a fast oxidizer, meaning his body used food very quickly. Since carbohydrates break down very quickly, they were not supplying Greg with the sustaining energy that he needed. He needed more protein (such as meat, eggs, fish, and chicken) and fat (such as avocadoes, olive oil, nuts, and natural butter) that would break down slower so he could get sufficient energy from the food that he ate.
Not only was Greg a fast oxidizer, his Diet Typing results also revealed acidic (low) blood pH. When someone’s blood pH is out of the normal range, their metabolism is not able to work efficiently. Every system in your body requires the blood pH to be within the normal range in order to function optimally. The carbohydrates that Greg was eating were keeping his blood pH low (acidic). He needed more protein to pull his blood pH up to the normal range. Greg would need to eat like a Lion! Bring on the meat!
When we explained Greg’s Diet Typing results to him, the light bulb went on. He knew that he felt better on protein, but he never tried a high protein diet. He was excited to start the Hauser Lion Diet, even though it meant decreasing his sugar intake and stopping his coffee because these two things make those with Lion physiology feel worse – the sugar is metabolized very quickly making a fast oxidizer burn up his food even faster; where coffee is extremely acidifying, making the acidic blood pH person even more acidic. Therefore, these are two things that Hauser Lions must avoid consuming – which often is difficult for them, but once they break the “habit” they typically find that they don’t miss them because they feel so much better! Greg was confident that the increased protein intake would improve his energy levels so that he wouldn’t be dependent on coffee for energy to get his day going.
When we followed up with Greg, he was very happy with the results he had seen on the Hauser Lion Diet. He said that the protein, decreased sugar, and elimination of coffee had made a huge difference in his energy throughout the day. Imagine that, energy levels going up with no coffee consumption at all!? Greg got all the energy he needed from a healthy Lion Diet. He was eating primarily protein and vegetables. He found ways to have Lion-friendly snacks such as hard boiled eggs, natural beef jerky, nuts and seeds. He drank only water and a little herbal tea. He was able to continue all of the athletic activities he enjoyed and knew he was on the way to a more fit body and improved athletic performance because already his energy had drastically improved.
